Super charged in Brum

Article Abstract:

The councils of Solihull and Coventry, England, have decided not to join with the four other councils, which were part of the old West Midlands county council, in introducing car parking charges for workplace car parks. Coventry council were concerned local businesses would move out of the area whilst Solihull felt the government should be responsible for the scheme. Some businesses were concerned the charges could be raised indiscriminately. The councils taking part in the scheme hope to raise extra funds although more costs will be involved as they have to collect the car parking revenue.

Green light for White Paper

Article Abstract:

The UK property industry has warmly received the government's White Paper on an integrated transport policy and there are few concerns over the proposals. The British Property Federation welcomes the government's focus on reducing car traffic in towns and cities. Business park developer Arlington says that the consultation document contains no nasty surprises, while MEPC says that the proposed tax on workplace parking spaces will have little effect on out-of-town office schemes.

Watertight plan sought

Article Abstract:

Some port expansion activity is taking place in the UK, but the government has given no indication about where port expansion should take place or how it will be assessed. There are no policies to address the conflict between the need to expand ports to boost the economy and the need to protect the environment. There is also uncertainty about government policy on inland waterways, although a number of initiatives to boost the use of canals have been introduced.
