Supermarket Goliaths prepare for OFT's sling

Article Abstract:

Major supermarkets Safeway, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's are anticipating an unfavourable report from the Office of Fair Trading following investigations into their profitability. Labour peer Baroness Thornton has been appointed spokesperson for the four supermarkets prior to publication of the report, with the media having already criticised the supermarkets' for abusing their dominant position and operating a monopoly. Investigators initially sought to analyse the benefit to consumers of savings made via the supermarkets' deals with suppliers, but they also ultimately investigated land prices and planning issues.

Prescott closes the door

Article Abstract:

Developers and retailers fear UK Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) John Prescott will further restrict out of town development in order to encourage more development in town centres. Some observers suggest large developments will no longer be permitted. Others admit only one out of 14 planning appeals for grocery stores have been allowed in 1998. A DETR study suggests the government have not got a clear business development policy and is against new development. A second report points out planning laws are restricting business in the UK.
