Toyota turbocharges its 1-64 cluster

Article Abstract:

Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America's Buffalo, West Virginia plant's deep labor pool and high productivity have added value to the company's other plants along I-64, which include the Georgetown, Kentucky; Princeton, Indiana; and Erlanger, Kentucky. The West Virginia plant has received 28,000-30,000 job applications in addition to the 29,000 applications received in the first 10 days after the plant was announced in 1996. Already the plant has seen two expansions in which it received more work, and it may receive more because a lot of land remains and the economies of scale and labor pool it provides. The company's capital investment and strategy of locating the plants along I-64 are discussed.
