The North of England: from ships to chips

Article Abstract:

The North of England has traditionally been known as the center of the UK's steel, coal and shipbuilding industries. In recent years, however, the area has gained increasing prominence for its large concentration of high technology centers as well as the favored investment destination for a large number of US, Asian and European companies. The North of England boasts a large pool of skilled, highly productive workers, low labor costs, excellent infrastructure and generous incentives for businesses.

North Star BHP Steel: how to build a world-class work force

Article Abstract:

North Star Steel and Australia's BHP established their joint-venture project, North Star BHP Steel mini-mill, in Delta, Fulton County, OH, due to the area's quality labor pool. Other factors which led to the site selection were the area's proximity to possible customers between Pittsburgh, PA, and Chicago, IL; the area's adequate energy infrastructure to power the mill; it's accessibility to scrap metal, which is the mill's primary raw material; and the good business climate in the area.

Blocked by the old chips

Article Abstract:

The year 2000 computer date change problem is set to have an impact on building management systems and services in the UK. So far, few landlords and tenants have checked their buildings' plant and equipment to ensure that it will not be affected by the year 2000 computer date change. If action is not taken, there may be serious consequences, including the loss of function in security installations, access equipment, lifts, air-conditioning and heating systems and fire alarms.
