The role of investment research in corporate real estate firms

Article Abstract:

Today's complicated and ever changing economic market makes it important that real estate investors conduct thorough research. Twenty-one real-estate companies responded to a survey by the Investment Research Group regarding their investment research departments. Most such departments employed less than ten professionals with the greatest part of their budget going to personnel, followed by data collection costs. The majority regarded their main duty to be market research.

The compensation of REIT CEOs provides inadequate incentives

Article Abstract:

A study has revealed that real estate investment trust CEOs' cash compensation correlates significantly with only two variables, tenure and market capitalization, and that their total compensation correlates significantly with only one variable, market capitalization. An effective CEO compensation program should have four basic elements: base cash compensation, incentive cash compensation, relative performance compensation and restricted stock or stock options.

Investment characteristics of international real estate equities

Article Abstract:

Investment in the securities of foreign real estate companies offers both advantages and disadvantages. These securities had higher rates of return than other world securities from 1980-1990, but World Index securities were less risky. International real estate equities had higher average price earnings multiples than world market indexes and US real estate investment trusts (REITs). However, the dividends of REITs were significantly better.
