The spice of life

Article Abstract:

Some observers point out the UK ethnic foods industry remains mostly in the hands of independent operators. Others suggest large companies would find it difficult to break into the industry because most customers like the individuality of local Chinese and Indian restaurants. The restaurant facility at Spitalfields, London, England, has a turnover worth more than 6 million pounds sterling for its 23 small ethnic food outlets. Some 85% of the ethnic food turnover, of 3.5 billion pounds sterling each year, was from Chinese and Indian restaurants.

Front row veteran

Article Abstract:

MFI Chairman Derek Hunt is keen to emphasize that the concern, the largest furniture retailer in the UK, is primarily a retailer, not a property company. It is currently reducing its presence on retail parks, and aims to remove the warehousing element from its stores. It will eventually have around 185 retail showrooms of 1,858 sq mt, supplied by 12 warehouses of 5,574 sq mt. There are plans to open four or five new format stores by 1999, possibly in the M25 area, where the company is currently under-represented.

Race to the line

Article Abstract:

The UK is performing strongly as the main location of call centre operations within Europe. Although the UK cannot offer a high number of bilingual workers it does offer a variety of grants, cheaper property rents and an available workforce. Belgium can offer highly educated workers but costs, such as the telecommunications network and labour, are more expensive than in the UK. Ireland is competitive with the UK as a location but the amount of suitable property in Ireland is scarce.
