This time it's for real

Article Abstract:

UK investment institutions have traditionally paid little attention to private rented housing stock. However, this situation has begun to change recently, and a further shift towards investment in private rented housing is likely to be prompted by the decision by both Schroders and Charterhouse Bank to launch investment funds focusing on this sector. Residential returns seem attractive because they are linked to average earnings, which tend to rise slightly ahead of inflation. Demographic trends are also favouring the private rented housing sector.

Colour blindness in housing debate

Article Abstract:

The UK government's policy of setting a national target for the proportion of new homes to be constructed on brownfield sites is meaningless in areas where there are not enough brownfield sites, according to delegates at the recent Estates Gazette Housing Forum. It is only appropriate to set targets which can be applied on a regional or local basis. If unrealistic targets are set, there is a danger that there will be unwise over-development within urban areas, while shire counties will fail to provide enough housing.

Gummer sets homework

Article Abstract:

The UK government's November, 1996 discussion paper relating to housing provision shows a commitment to using brownfield sites for residential property developments. No mention is made of resources or incentives to encourage this, however. Environment Secretary John Gummer wants to build 60% of the 4.4 million dwellings needed by 2016 in existing urban locations.
