Too many flaws?

Article Abstract:

Department stores have suffered because of the advent of large shopping centres which offer customers a wide range of retail outlets in one place. Department stores have begun to sell ranges of designer clothing, such as Armani, and can offer a lot of space with low rents, however, many designers are not keen to sell their clothes in stores without a good image. Designers may also prefer to open their own shop rather than a concession in a department store. Department stores need to concentrate on sharpening up their image and modernising their interiors if they are to be competitive.

Healthy competition or a fight to the death?

Article Abstract:

John Lewis is planning to move to an out-of-town shopping centre at Cribbs Causeway. Its 278,000 square feet (sq ft) city centre site is to be occupied by Bentalls, which is to spend over 10 million pounds sterling on refurbishment prior to its move in 1998. The effects of the new out-of-town development on the city centre are discussed. It is suggested that the new shopping centre has encouraged the council to improve the neglected city centre.
