Turning the corner on shopping

Article Abstract:

The creation of Royal Tunbridge Wells Town Centre Management has had a positive impact on the retail sector in this Kent town. However, retailers could now face a challenge from out-of-town retail schemes. In the commercial sector, some 46,450 sq mt was vacant at the end of 1995. In Bromley, there are a number of plans for new development. However, there is a lot of housing which comes right up to the town centre, so it is not really possible to expand the area given over to offices.

North of the dome, a new world view

Article Abstract:

London's Newham council is preparing to develop a 485 ha area of land, with 156 million pounds sterling in grants already secured from Europe and the Single Regeneration Budget. The borough's Arc of Opportunity is currently a deprived area of wasteland, industrial estates and high-density housing and the council proposes to transform it into an area of high-quality homes with a new Central Line underground station, a university and business centre, and a canal system.

Taking stock while the tide is low

Article Abstract:

The county of Kent, England, faces a tough climb out of the recession that badly hit the South East. The region has lost 850,000 jobs since 1989 and consumer spending has decreased. There is weak demand for office space in many of the county's business parks and there is little expectation of immediate improvement. However, there are good prospects for long-term growth following a number of important infrastructure developments, including the Channel Tunnel.
