Trouble in store

Article Abstract:

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has called for the UK government to sanction a reduction in interest rates to boost the retail market. Some analysts point out a number of stores have recorded good results whilst the more established companies report a decline in consumer spending. Others confirm some shopping centres are having difficulty finding tenants despite threats the government will restrict further building in out of town retail parks. BRC UK retail sales figures show growth in the year to Aug 1998 up by 1.5% in contrast to a growth of 7.6% in the year to Aug 1997.

Shopping by design

Article Abstract:

The Cheshire Oaks shopping mall in North Wales does not appear to be having a detrimental effect on the rest of the retail trade in the area even though its sales figures are 10% greater than expected. The 18,000 square meters mall has been trading for one year since 1995 and is expected to be expanded by another 13,000 square meters if planning permission is granted. Customers are often tourists or locals are travelling from Cheshire and other areas of the country.

Winners and losers

Article Abstract:

Prime zone A retail rents rose by 1.5% in the year to Sep 1994, having fallen in the previous three years. Incentive packages are no longer needed to attract retailers, and there is now strong demand for space in the best pitches. However, rents are still considerably lower than the peak levels reached in 1989-90. Most towns have experienced large rental declines in real terms, and this will have a significant impact on future development.
