VAT fuels 'new for old' storm

Article Abstract:

Some UK housebuilders point out they will need to restore old properties and build new houses on the same site in order to achieve government housebuilding projections. The government wants 4.4 million new houses by the year 2016. The housebuilders also point out the value-added-taxation (VAT) system needs to be changed in respect of property conversions. They are unable to reclaim VAT for conversion work therefore it can be more profitable to demolish an old building and replace it with new buildings. Housing repairs and new house construction do allow VAT to be reclaimed.

Problems over copyright

Article Abstract:

The recent case of Cala Homes (South) Ltd vs Alfred McAlpine Homes East Ltd highlighted some interesting points regarding copyright on house design features. It was found that McAlpine had infringed copyright, and Cala is now to receive damages. The case illustrates the problems which can be faced when designing new products. McAlpine took considerable risks, and would ultimately have found it cheaper to compete fairly with Cala.
