Visions of grandeur

Article Abstract:

Retail rents have risen substantially in Cardiff, Wales. This trend has benefited landlords and investors, but has cut the number of potential occupiers who can take prime sites. It is generally agreed that there is still strong demand for retail space, but some observers believe that the large multiple retailers are still cautious about where they locate. Rising prime rents are extending the boundaries of the secondary shopping areas as retailers unable to occupy the prime retail sites seek less expensive alternatives. Retail development is also taking place in Newport, Wales, and Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

Holding the loyalty card

Article Abstract:

Retailers in the centre of Bristol, England, have not been as negatively affected by the opening of the 67,353 sq mt Mall regional shopping centre off junction 17 of the M5 as had initially been feared. Property agents feel that the two shopping areas are not in direct competition, with the Mall having a larger catchment area than the centre of Bristol. Research indicates that further space for retail development is required in the city centre. Potential retail locations include a 1.9 ha site on Bond Street and St Mary le Port on the corner of Wine Street and High Street.

Leisure's time

Article Abstract:

The demand for retail outlets in Cambridge, England, is very buoyant, with the possibility of 425,000 sq ft of new space being built at the Grand Arcade. Demand for offices is less active as the lack of parking and new traffic restrictions have an impact on the sector. Leisure development in the city is limited due to competition for sites from the retail sector. A 20 million pounds sterling leisure development for the south of Cambridge is waiting for planning permission. A new swimming pool and a three-screen cinema are under construction.
