Window dressing

Article Abstract:

UK department stores have experienced considerable difficulties over recent years, especially in terms of image. However, there are now signs that they are undergoing a period of painful change, following which they will become much more modern and aligned with customer preferences. House of Fraser, for example, is investing very heavily in revamping its stores, but it could take many years before it reaps the benefits from this investment. More success has been seen at JLP, where department store sales have risen by 7%.

Lead is a four-letter word

Article Abstract:

Lead coating is a major problem faced by owners of steel structures and engineers, but it must be removed to ensure pollution free air. Lead is safe on steel structures, but its disposal causes environmental regulations when it is removed. Most owners postpone the expense of removing lead based paint by applying another coat, and others hope for lower costs in removing lead. Since costs involved in controlling lead pollution might be more, owners and engineers must curb pollution through lead paint projects.

Scene but not heard

Article Abstract:

Newspaper articles used to get straight to the main substance at the outset of the story, but the tendency in 1998 is to set the stage by starting with anecdotes. This pseudo-literary trend was purged from The New York Times when an editor wrote a satirical piece about JFK's assassination.
