Readability Measurements of Palantype Transcription for the Deaf

Article Abstract:

Palantype transcription is a mechanical shorthand system used for verbatim reporting. Normal Palantype script, two artificially enhanced Palantype scripts and English orthography of a piece of text formed the base for a comparative study of readability. The subjects of the study were members of deaf and hard of hearing clubs. The Cloze method of eliminating words to be replaced as a measurement of comprehension was employed. Results show that the more the text differed from normal English, the lower the readability.
