Being public: the politics of representation in 1918 Shanghai

Article Abstract:

The 1918 dispute in Shanghai involving the Guang-Zhao gongsuo (native place association) illustrates the process of displacement of older forms of association through the apparent adoption of Western forms. Topics include the Guang-Zhao gongsuo crisis, the media of public interaction, claims to manifest the spirit of the Republic, representing the public and serving the people, the model meeting, the multiplication of representative associations, the discordant voices of the represented, and the cultural politics of the new Republic.

The new woman commits suicide: The press, cultural memory, and the new republic

Article Abstract:

The suicide case of Xi Shangzhen, who hanged herself in the office of her employer, Tang Jiezhi in Shanghai is investigated. The case had influenced the public opinion, which had become an important arbiter of both interest and value.
