Bhutan in 1995: weathering the storm

Article Abstract:

Bhutan continued to rely heavily on India for foreign aid and trade and negotiated with Nepal regarding the issue of Bhutanese refugees on Nepalese soil in 1995. However, ethnic nationalism, remained the main concern of the Bhutanese government. Southern Bhutanese have yet to subscribe fully to the Drukpa cultural and political ethos. The National Assembly is bent on integrating these Southerners into mainstream society.

Article Abstract:

The key question in both Bhutan and Nepal during 2005 was whether Monarchy and democracy could coexist. Two developments in Nepal would be major factors in determining the survival of the Shah dynasty and, in the longer term, whether the Nepalese nation-state survives as a sovereign entity at all.
