Caroline Gordon was overshadowed during her lifetime by her better-regarded husband and has been excluded by critics from the revision of traditional Southern fiction. The fictions recreating her father in the persona of Aleck Maury locate Caroline Gordon's greatest literary achievement in her translation of the heroic cycle from classical to modern Southern narrative.

Caroline Pafford Miller, Southern writer, won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, 'Lamb in His Bosom', in 1934. The novel is an invaluable recreation of the lives of nonslaveholding white pioneers and is an important study in feminine writing and the female experience.

A critical insight into the complexities of Caroline Gordon's aesthetic politics in her early novels of Southern history is presented. An investigation, of the apparent laden contradictions in her work and her mythic consciousness, is carried out.
