Emigration and stability in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

Increasing emigration from Hong Kong may threaten its economic stability. In 1990, approximately 1% of the population, comprising young, educated, middle-class professionals emigrated. Better job opportunities and the threat to personal freedom when Hong Kong becomes a special administrative region (SAR) of China in 1997, are the main reasons for emigration. Hong Kong, however, can balance its brain drain by a proportionate replenishment of manpower. Moreover, its social structure is unlikely to collapse since the government only plays a supportive role in business.

After the Hong Kong miracle: women workers under industrial restructuring

Article Abstract:

Industrial restructuring in the manufacturing sector has adversely affected the employment of women workers in Hong Kong. In a stronger global competition, manufacturers are relocating their factories to countries with lower labor rates. The growth of financial and business services in Hong Kong has also resulted in a slack in domestic production. The female wage-earners in Hong Kong suffer from higher rate of unemployment, declined standards of living and demoralization due to the structural changes in the Asian-Pacific region.
