Fighting terrorism while promoting democracy: Competing priorities in U.S. defense policy toward Latin America

Article Abstract:

The US defense policy emphasis on the need for greater civilian expertise and building more civil-military institutions in Latin America. It is analyzed that the defense policy of encouraging Latin America militaries to participate in the 'war on terror' has a negative effect on the democratization of defense institutions.

Lessons from history on the limits of imperialism: Successful small state resistance to great power aggression

Article Abstract:

The objective of the study is to explore the factors involved in successful resistance by smaller 'weaker' nations to larger powers' aggression. The purpose of the study, however, is not to remind that David does, occasionally, beat Goliath but to identify the historical elements of successful resistance.
