Filial emotions and filial values: changing patterns in the discourse of filiality in late Choson Korea

Article Abstract:

Choson dynasty in their efforts to promote philosophy of patriarchal Confucianism actively propagated the values of family bonds and unity in ancient Korea. The Filial piety and values were praised in literature and other art forms. It prescribed primogeniture as a tool for proliferating the ideology. Subsequently, the Buddhist philosophy emphasized universal nexus more than familial bonds. Buddhism paved the way for change, and gave a new meaning to family relations.

Political representation and South Korean women

Article Abstract:

Women's political representation in South Korea is examined in the context of their political participation as political elite, and the controversies and contradictory views surrounding women's underrepresentation. An analysis of the South Korean case is presented in order to investigated the merits or otherwise of such contradicting views.

Centering the King of Choson: Aspects of Korean Maritime Diplomacy, 1392-1592

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the disadvantages of maritime diplomacy in Korea between 1392 and 1592 which was based on a sinocentric model of international relations. The relationship with Ryukyu and Japan is discussed.
