Political participation of women: The case of women councilors in Kerala, India

Article Abstract:

Women throughout the world have remained out of politics for a long time, and in India, although women make up around half of the total electorate, their representation in Lok Sabha has been inadequate. The State of Kerala is known for its socioeconomic, demographic and developmental features, and a large number of women exercise their franchise in elections. However there is a low proportion of women in the State Legislative Assembly. Attempts are being made however, by those newly elected women councilors, to undertake their political role effectively.

More than 60% work for 8 to 12 hours everyday and many are physically abused. Incidence of child labor in Kerala continue to rise despite having one of the best enrolment ratios in the country.
