German and Middle Eastern literary traditions in a novel by Salim Alafenisch: thoughts on a germanophone Beduin author from the Negev

Article Abstract:

Salim Alafenisch portrays Beduin life in the desert to German audiences. Combining Middle Eastern fairy-tale motifs yet speaking and writing in German, Alafenisch enthralls both children and adults. The innocent, simple nomads resist modern ways, such as taxation and capitalism. Examples of resistance and survival emerge in prison tales and victimization. The author, the son of a sheik in the Negev, creates male cliches about Beduins reminiscent of Karl May's immensely popular Native Americans series.

Attachment, patriarchal anxiety, and paradigm selection in German literary criticism

Article Abstract:

A common thread in psychoanalytically informed literary studies that ran throughout German literary criticism is focused. An argument is made, which defines psychoanalytic criticism as the application of a Freudian Oedipal model to the interpretation of literary works and social-historical problems.
