Industrialized markets for developing-country manufactured exports: the good, the poor, and the indifferent

Article Abstract:

Wealth and size affect developed nations' level of imports in relation to third world countries' manufactured goods, such as electronics and luggage. Switzerland, Austria, Ireland and the United States are industrialized countries with high level of imports from 1968 to 1992. The US was able to maintain its position as one of the top importers of goods manufactured in developing countries even during worst years. On the other hand, Japan's record of imports declined dramatically during the 1980s despite the country's tremendous growth during the same period.

Exports and economic growth in a simultaneous equations model

Article Abstract:

Increased exports do help contribute to economic growth, but there is a wide variation in the impact of exports among less developed countries (LDCs), with primary product exporters benefiting least, and countries concentrating on processed goods benefiting most. The bigger a country's export sector, the larger is investment in the domestic economy. Differences between economists and sociologists arise because economists focus on absolute gains, and sociologists focus on relative gains, and the distribution of those gains.
