Japan's aid policy since the cold war: rhetoric and reality

Article Abstract:

Policy makers and aid scholars have debated heatedly over the motivations underlying Japan's aid program from the time that nation became a major foreign aid donor. The existing consensus in scholarly literature is that the Japanese government has replaced its self-interested aid strategy with a degree of leadership within the aid regime comparable to its economic contributions. An empirical analysis is made of Japanese aid during the 1980s and 1990s and the findings are placed within the context of two distinct scholarly discourses regarding Japanese aid.

Russia and North Korea: an emerging, uneasy partnership

Article Abstract:

Relations between the Soviet Union and North Korea have always been characterized by an absence of real mutual trust, although both countries subscribed to the same ideology. Relations improved during the 1980s but the Soviet Union's decision to send athletes to the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea incurred the ire of North Korea. As Russia seeks a more prominent role in Korean unification, it may need to project a more amicable attitude towards North Korea.

Myth and reality in the discourse of Confucian capitalism in Korea

Article Abstract:

The Asian phenomenon some scholars have described as "Confucian capitalism" is actually based on relatively superficial applications of theories developed by Max Weber. Although Weber's major points are relevant to the modern Korean economy, they must be reinterpreted in light of globalization.
