'L'Homme aux quarante ecus': Voltaire economiste

Article Abstract:

Voltaire anticipates the development of liberal capitalism in 'L'Homme aux quarante ecus.' The tale describes the impatience and resentments of the bourgeoisie of France in the 18th century. Voltaire's approach is more polemical than analytic, as he attempts to elucidate the laws of economic development and to criticize abusive aspects of the economic order of his time and the defects of the new economic theory. Article text is in French.

Putting Voltaire's 'Henriade' in the hands of the young

Article Abstract:

Voltaire's 'Henriade' was required reading in French schools for the first third of the 19th century, yet those editions significantly modified Voltaire's text. The French educational establishment made conscious efforts to identify and incorporate "classic" editions into its curriculum, yet administrators felt Voltaire could only be studied by young readers in censored form.
