'Le Cours des devises' in Marguerite Yourcenar's 'Memoires d'Hadrien.'

Article Abstract:

Marguerite Yourcenar's 'Memoires d'Hadrien' portrays the emperor gradually coming to accept the uncertainty of uncontrollable circulation in the form of mail, gossip, and literature. The novel mostly supports Hadrian's self-image, although the author also includes some indications of its inadequacy. The rigidity of inscriptions and formulas is contrasted with the vitality and unruliness of language in circulation.
