Testing French teacher certification candidates for speaking ability: an alternative to the OPI

Article Abstract:

Many state departments of education have requirements that foreign language teachers demonstrate their competence by written test. The Florida Initial Teacher Subject Area Test is an example and also evaluates speaking ability. This test was developed as an alternative to the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Cheaper and more efficient to given than an OPI-type test, this test is a relatively easy way of assessing the speaking ability of large numbers of candidates. Initial research on the test's reliability gives good results and potential for usage in other settings.

Sample projects at the elementary, intermediate and advanced level of French language instruction are described.
