Vietnam in 1996: reform immobilism

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's 1996 performance in the economic and diplomatic arenas contrasted sharply with its performance in the political front. The economy posted strong growth in all major sectors despite 38 storms and major flooding on the Red River and the Mekong. In international affairs, Vietnam has finally normalized relations with Asian neighbors and the rest of the world. Politically, the country achieved very little, missing the opportunities offered by the Eighth Party Congress and the Tenth National Assembly, which are held every five years.

Vietnam in 1995: successes in peace

Article Abstract:

Vietnam achieved remarkable success in foreign diplomacy in 1995 by becoming an Assn. of South East Asian Nations member and establishing diplomatic relations with the US. Becoming a more active player in Asia would bring problems as well as opportunities for Vietnam. Establishing diplomatic relations with the US could strain its relations with China but Vietnam knows too well that strategic anxieties can be avoided if it maintains amicable relations with both major powers.

General reflections on informal politics in East Asia

Article Abstract:

The interplay of formal and informal politics shapes the political system that is distinctly East Asian. However, it is difficult to make generalizations regarding East Asian informal politics since it developed differently in each country of the region. Although there are similarities, institutional changes and the nature of the political structure in each country present complexities.
