Sealing the mouth of outrage: Notes on the meaning and intent of Hart's These from the land of Sinim

Article Abstract:

The collection of essays entitled 'These from the land of Sinim', written by Robert Hartfcritica, who was the chief fiscal administrator of the Chinese Empire during the 19th century, were written immediately after the relief of the besieged legations in Peking. These articles, written during the time when China's fate hung in balance, seem to have had the priorities of preventing the carve-up of China in the African model and realism in considering the preserved Empire's ability to make recompense for China's 'sins' in a time of world outrage.
