Long-term trends in China-Taiwan relations: Implications for U.S. Taiwan policy

Article Abstract:

Long-term economic and military trends combined with Taiwan's movement towards independence from China are reshaping the security environment in the Taiwan Strait in destabilizing ways and challenging China's supremacy in the region. The US has shown deep interest in the developments and involved itself in maintaining stability and preserving the status quo but with China increasing its military strength, the US would also have to increase its military involvement.

China's perception of U.S. intentions toward Taiwan: how hostile a hegemon?

Article Abstract:

The perception on China's part that the US is committed to keeping Taiwan and the mainland apart is discussed with a view to proving Chinese fears as baseless. The importance of the US assuring China that it does not support Taiwan's independence and that it would be prepared to accept unification if it was brought about peacefully and consensually is emphasized.
