Love in a colonial climate: marriage, sex and romance in nineteenth-century Bengal

Article Abstract:

The influence of colonial rule on marriage, sex and romance among the Bengali Hindu 'bhadralok' in the 19th century is discussed. Topics include the traditional beliefs and values concerning marriage and sexuality, the child-bride, and changes related to colonial rule, including consensual marriage and romantic love.

Shadows of the swastika: historical perspectives on the politics of Hindu communalism

The relationship between Hindu nationalism and fascism is discussed. Topics include the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and affiliated organizations Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), xenophobia and communal hatred.
