Revisions, rememories and exorcisms: Toni Morrison and the slave narrative

Article Abstract:

The revisions and reworking of slave narrative in Toni Morrison's 'Beloved' enable the author to overcome the limits of the narrative with respect to its conception and agenda. The classic slave narrative is a flat and one-dimensional aspect of slavery, whereas the reworking of the narrative allows the consideration of feelings and perceptions of its other side. Morrison uses modernist techniques compatible with the generic gothic tradition to expand the range of the agenda. The novel examines the historical perception of slavery, with reference to 19th century social and political contexts.
