India in 2007: a year of opportunities and disappointments

Article Abstract:

India celebrated its 60th anniversary of independence in 2007 with much joy and triumph because of its continuous success in the corporate sector as well as expansion in its global reach. The year has witnessed a deepening of ties with the U.S. and in spite of its economic growth and other achievements, India still has to overcome many shortcomings and challenges, especially poverty.

Malaysia in 2007: high corruption and low opposition

Article Abstract:

The year 2007 marks Malaysia's half-centenary of independence and a year of political and economic continuity. Though the country showed economic progress, simmering of tensions over ethnic relations and smoothly conducted foreign relations, it also witnessed an extraordinary scandal involving a prominent political advisor and corruption scandals involving the judiciary and police.

Indonesia in 2006: Cautious reform

Article Abstract:

Indonesia seemed to be regaining a sense of stability in 2006 through cautious reforms, no major negative events and the most successful political event being the cementing of the peace agreement in Aceh. Indonesia's economy continued to grow despite being held back by corruption and poverty.
