Afghanistan in 2005: The challenges of reconstruction

Article Abstract:

Afghanistan, in 2005, experienced parliamentary elections, the disarming of official militias, a budget that aims at improving the economic and fiscal sector, continuing counter-narcotic efforts, curbing of the neo-Taliban insurgency, integration of its displaced population, strengthened diplomatic ties with the US, and an improved diplomatic image. Afghanistan is building key institutions in this time of transition, although it faces grave challenges because the task of achieving political and economic stability is monumental.

Afghanistan in 2006: The complications of post-conflict transition

Article Abstract:

A bold and positive step forward in institution-building was taken in Afghanistan in 2006 when a democratically elected parliament began to function. But Afghanistan's transition to peace and stability is very slow and not assured, with the threat of a more violent Taliban insurgency and an increased opium cultivation slowing down development and reconstruction.

Afghanistan in 2007: a bleeding wound

Article Abstract:

Afghanistan in the year 2007 remains in the grip of increasing violence and Taliban insurgency and opium production is on the increase. Afghanistan still needs international military assistance to curb the growing violence as the police and army are corrupted and inefficient, which is also the reason for growing narcotics trade in the country.
