Laos in 1996: please don't rush!

Article Abstract:

Nineteen ninety-six was a politically eventful year for Laos. The Sixth Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, held every five years, took place in March and approved several changes that rejected comprehensive and rapid economic reform. On the issue of foreign relations, the Sixth Congress gave priority to the country's relations with Vietnam and China. Economically, Laos' growth rate has remained high despite the weak performance of the agricultural sector.

The dynamics of regional disparities in Laos: the poor and the rich

Article Abstract:

The disparities in infrastructure and human capital endowment are two of the main reasons for the economic differences between the provinces in Laos. While provinces with high GDP per capita have higher literacy rate and better infrastructure, lower literacy and bad infrastructure are observed in provinces with low GDP per capita. The huge gender difference in literacy rate also contributes significantly to the economic disparity observed between the provinces.

Laos in 1995: reform policy, out of breath?

Article Abstract:

Laos' current political, social and economic problems are more developmental than transitional. The New Economic Mechanism program promises a better economy but resistance to political reform is likely to hinder the success of the program. There is a need to balance growth in the urban and rural areas. Representation of rural interests and greater emphasis on increased agricultural production would result in a more balanced economic development in Laos.
