Sri Lanka in 2007: military successes but at humanitarian and economic costs

Article Abstract:

The article reviews Sri Lanka's military campaign, its economic growth and the regime's human rights record in 2007. Army consolidated its presence by strengthening its high-security zones and resettling people affected by the fighting, inflation rose significantly in spite of the economic growth rate, and criticism by the international community on human rights violations by Sri Lankan military for recruiting child soldiers into its ranks was consistent.

North Korea in 2007: shuffling in from the cold

Article Abstract:

The article reviews North Korea's renewal of harmonious relationship in 2007 bringing with it changes to the country's external environment and domestic political economy. This is reflected in the resumption of the Six-Party Talks and the second North-South summit, and the most intense change in external environment is South Korea's shift in its foreign policy towards a strategy of engagement.

The 1997 Asian financial crisis and the revival of populism/neo-populism in 21st century Philippine politics

Article Abstract:

The Asian financial crisis provided an opportunity to politicians in Philippines to install populist governments and capitalize on the situation. The political underdevelopment of the Philippine society is reflected in this situation.
