The United States and Asia in 2005: Managing troubles, sustaining leadership

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted on American policy in Asia about deepening American preoccupations with other problems at home and abroad shows that Bush administration policy toward Asia generally continues along established paths and remains secondary in US policy priorities. The administration stepped up high-level exchanges with Asian counterparts, showed some flexibility over North Korea, and resisted domestic pressures for a tougher China policy.

Russia and the CIS in 2006: Asserting Russian interests on Korean security, energy, and Central Asia

Article Abstract:

Russia shares international concerns about the security consequences of the North Korean nuclear test conducted in October 2006. One of the world's leading oil producers, Russia looked for added opportunities to bolster energy cooperation with its import-dependent neighbors in Asia, and is also making efforts to expand cooperation with Kazakhstan.

The United States and Asia in 2006: Crisis management, holding patterns, and secondary initiatives

Article Abstract:

The relationship of the United States with some Asian countries in 2006 is discussed. The failure of the U.S. to halt North Korea's nuclear program, its established liaisons with Asian countries in 2006, and initiatives in U.S. relations with India, Kazakhstan and Southeast Asia are described.
