Monkeys on the move: the natural symbolism of people-macaque conflict in Japan

Article Abstract:

The macaque monkey has long been held to have a special place in Japanese culture, but the people-monkey conflict has become an object of national concern in Japan. Culling is denounced in the mass media on conservationist grounds and local people have no role in the management of the macaque. The stark representation of people-monkey conflict in Japan is challenged and it is shown that although human violence against monkeys does occur, there is also opposition to culling, and some actively feed wild monkeys, contradicting the idea of a rural monkey war.

Gaijinhanzai: immigrants and drugs in contemporary Japan

Article Abstract:

Japanese officials' pronouncements linking the increase of immigrants to drug crimes are doubtful. Statistics used were insufficiently divided to fit their supposition. Also, foreigners are more likely to be arrested because of the manner in which drug is traded coupled with law enforcement procedures in the country. Distorting information on the true situation and dynamics of drug crimes by foreigners would not be helpful in coping with the problem.

'Japan' in an English mirror

Article Abstract:

The four volumes of the 'Cambridge History of Japan' covering the 12th to 20th centuries offer insight into Japan's history but limitedly. Reviewers have welcomed the volumes despite their problems. Comparisons between the history of England and that of Japan show many similarities in the development of the two islands. Both countries were the first commercial metropolitan societies in their respective halves of the world.
