Country blues on the screen: the Leadbelly films

Article Abstract:

The Leadbelly films are unique representations of the life and musical talent of the legendary country blues performer Huddie Ledbetter and his significant contribution to American folk revival. CBS radio newscast 'The March of Time' focused on racial interaction, with the folksinger as a musical recluse who is grateful to his white mentors. 'Leadbelly,' made in 1975, recounts the singer's troubled early life in the race conscious environment of the deep South and his pride in his musical heritage. Ledbetter's cinematic image remains that of a rural singer, as chalked out for him by John and Alan Lomax.
