The debate on the strength of slave families: South Carolina and the importance of cross-plantation marriages

Article Abstract:

Historians have had difficulties in assessing the extent and nature of slave cross-plantation marriages, as white sources provide no basis for estimating their scale or character. Black sources and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) were the main sources for reconstructing the numerical importance of cross-plantation marriages. It is argued that cross-plantation unions accounted for 34% of salve households in antebellum South Carolina, and such marriages were often vigorously supported by the slaves concerned, pointing to the broader resilience of the slave community.
