Nationals, citizens, countrymen: a new analysis of identities with a focus on Central Asia

Article Abstract:

Existing concepts of nation and state rely on several characteristics, namely, self-identity, nationalism, territory and cultural homogeneity. However, the rise and fall of the USSR has created problems in delineating nations and states in Central Asia. The emergence of the USSR forced many ethnically-cohesive groups to split and develop self-identities of their own. The fall of the USSR caused these ethnic groups, which have the same cultural roots, to seek one another as different from themselves.

Oceans unbounded: Transversing Asia across "Area Studies"

Article Abstract:

The challenge of presenting an interconnected Asia that is not subservient to the boundaries of area studies and modern nations, and yet does not descent to the simplistic and overly general, is addressed. A most persuasive case is made to bring the seas and sea-oriented communities into a comparative framework for understanding and opening new perspectives on Asian histories and cultures.
