Regional income inequalities and government investment in Venezuela

Article Abstract:

During the 1960s, Venezuela attempted to equalize the income distribution among its regions by government investment in poorer states and regions. The failure of this policy is explained by three factors: investment in low productivity enterprises such as agriculture, a flow back to developed areas, through market forces, of the funds invested in rural areas, and a strong internal migration away from rural, poorer areas into areas viewed as economically desirable by the population.

Determinants of migration to and from Bolivar state, Venezuela for 1961 and 1990: the effect of Ciudad Guayana on migration

Article Abstract:

The study is conducted to determine whether the predictor variables pertaining to aggregate characteristics of the origin and destination states of life-time migrants to and from Bolivar State, a location of Cuidad Guayana, differ as of 1961 and 1990. The results suggested that 1961 life-time inmigrants responded to distance, while, 1990 life-time inmigrants responded to distance, population, and industry.

Regional productivity and convergence in Bangladesh agriculture

Article Abstract:

The sequential Malmquist index was used to calculate multi-lateral, multi-factor productivity indices for agriculture in 16 regions of Bangladesh from 1964 to 1992. Findings show a steady decline in technical efficiency due to falling efficiency in most regions in later years. Policy options that could reverse declining efficiency are discussed.
