Politics of conflict and containment: Ecuador's labor movement and U.S. foreign policy, 1944-1963

Article Abstract:

Internal as well as external forces were responsible for the divisiveness in Ecuador's labor movement. Such schisms were evident in the Confederacion de Trabajadores del Ecuador (CTE) and other labor unions, effectively preventing cooperation among the trade unions to serve as counterpoise among the business community, the armed forces and the conservatives and the handful of foreign firms controlling most of the country's wealth. In 1963, however, an anti-union policy was put in place by the junta de gobierno. By closing down the CTE and jailing labor leaders, it suppressed labor rights for three years. Collaborating with right-wing groups in Ecuador, the US played a crucial role in shaping labor policy and the labor movement during the Cold War.
