Ramayana and political imagination in India

Article Abstract:

The 'Ramayana' presents an ideal political situation to be emulated, and its evil counterpart to be shunned. These concepts were prevalent in West and North Indian politics from the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries, and have been revived in the 1990s by the political party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP claims that its ideology is based on the 'Ramayana,' and it visualizes an anti-muslim Hindu state. The influence of the 'Ramayana' on the political orientation in different ages is examined.
