Monika Maron's novel 'Animal Triste' provides insight on the personal and collective memory of Germans after reunification. As the novel's main character must confront and acknowledge wrongful acts of her past, Germans must also undo cultural and psychical repression before the trauma of unification can be addressed and experienced.
