Unraveling the Japan-South Korea "virtual alliance": Populism and historical revisionism in the face of conflicting regional strategies

Article Abstract:

A different logic, linking domestic politics and international agendas is identified, which highlights Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro's single-minded commitment to pay annual visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, where Class A war criminals convicted at the Tokyo War crimes are enshrined. This logic is seen as a part of the worldwide view that encourages nationalist sentiments designed to allow Japanese to feel prouder of their history.

Japan in 2007: a divided government

Article Abstract:

Japan's political scene, foreign policy, and its economic appreciation in 2007 are reviewed. Partial defeat of the Liberal Democratic Party led to a divided government, triangular mergers opened doors for overseas firms, and the U.S. financial and economic uncertainty led to a sharp appreciation of the yen and evoked concern regarding Japanese dependence on exports to the U.S.
