Reading, writing, and recovering: creating a woman's Creole identity in Myriam Warner-Vieyra's 'Juletane.'

Article Abstract:

Both Helene and Juletane recover their creole identities in Myriam Warner-Vieyra's 'Juletane.' 'La creolite' is understood as a cultural confrontation between two people with a syncretic, new culture as the end result. For Juletane, the process culminates in extreme anger and deadly actions. Helene's epiphany comes by reading Juletane's diary and thus coming to terms with her identity as a West Indian woman living in Africa. Helene ends the novel feeling connected to her oppressed Third World compatriots.
