Realism, liberalism, and the durability of the U.S.-South Korean alliance

Article Abstract:

The US needs to transform its definition of security to be able to understand sources of discord in its alliance with South Korea. The strain felt by the two countries are due to differences in their policies toward North Korea. It is unrealistic to expect South Korea to drop its barriers knowing its neighbor could willfully ignore terms under the nuclear disarmament pact. Even a completed reunification would not stop South Korea from fearing possible aggression from the North. The US must take these into consideration to effectively deter crisis in the region.

Russia in Asia in 1997: moving beyond the "strategic partnership."

Article Abstract:

Russia's international relations was characterized under a 'balanced' policy with its intentions to promote diversification of contacts among Asian countries. In 1997, a series of summits were conducted to dismiss territorial disputes with China and to establish amicable foreign relations with Japan through its expansion of political, military and economic ties. However, internal economic unrest in Moscow and in the Russian Far Eastern remain as the most profound deterrent to greater Russian association in Asia.

Russian policy and the changing Korean question

Article Abstract:

Russia seeks a bigger and more important role in Asian affairs. However, the Russian government does not know any other way to achieve this goal than to provide military assistance. Russia's offer to sell nuclear reactors to North Korea was harshly criticized by the US. Russia considers its proposal as vital to achieving the necessary influence and leverage upon North and South Korea. Short-term considerations, however, will not provide a greater role for Russia in Asia.
