Religion, nostalgia, and memory: Making an ancient and recent Tai-Ahom identity in Assam and Thailand

Article Abstract:

The production of the Phra Lung religion, combining elements of Tantric Hinduism with Thai Buddhism and local ancestor worship and conjuring a history and collective memory, gives form and shape to the politics and discourse of the Tai-Ahom identity movement. The connections between Phra Lung and Tai-Ahom are explored to understand connections between religion and identity politics enabling followers in Assam to connect with political and intellectual agendas in process in Thailand.

Zines and zones of desire: mass-mediated love, national romance, and sexual citizenship in gay Indonesia

Article Abstract:

The creation of zones of desire, identity and community by the gay zines in Indonesia is discussed. The gay zines challenge the definitions of 'mass' media and provide unique insights into the relationship among print technologies, sexual subjectivities and narratives of belonging.
