Repetition, rhyme, and exchange in the 'Book of Odes.' (classical Chinese poetry)

Article Abstract:

The classical Chinese poetry found in the 'Book of Odes' uses recurring rhymes and specific sets of rhyme words to communicate set themes both within poems and throughout the classical poetic tradition as a whole. Ultimately, these sets of rhyme words transcended the genre of poetry and came to represent fixed concepts in prose as well. Classical Chinese poetry seems to involve a deep interconnectedness between poetic forms, structures and devices, and the moral meaning of the poetry itself. Classical poetic form conveyed specific content and, eventually, effected general linguistic changes.

Pursuing the complete bamboo in the breast: reflections on a classical Chinese image for immediacy

Article Abstract:

The bamboo in the breast was used as an image for immediate experience in the classical Chinese poetry of Su Shi (1037-1101). The Chinese image emphasizes a process of internalizing the object before representing it whereas Western images of immediacy emphasize purity of perception. Chinese aesthetics involves a dichotomy between temporality and constancy, rather than the Western separation between subject and object.

Aesthetics and meaning in experience: A theoretical perspective on Zhu Xi's revision of song dynasty views of poetry

Article Abstract:

Zhu Xi's judgments about poetic style form part of the larger debate about knowledge, the self and how one understands both the meaning of experience and the source of that meaning. His understanding of the nature of the self and the stress he laid on principles of order beyond the flux of the phenomenal realm had redefined what role the aesthetic could play in the construction of meaning.
